5 Myths About Dental Implants That Are Stopping You From Getting Yours

In over 15 years of practicing implant dentistry, I've heard every reason why someone is hesitant to get an implant. And while some concerns are completely valid and worth discussing, many of them are based on information that is simply outdated — or just plain wrong.
I'm writing this because I've watched patients live with missing teeth for years, avoid photos, change how they eat, and quietly let their confidence erode — all because of fears that we could have addressed in a 30-minute conversation. So let's have that conversation now.
Myth #1: "Implants are excruciatingly painful."
This is the most common fear, and I understand it completely. The idea of something being placed into your jaw sounds alarming. But here's what actually happens: the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you feel pressure but not pain during placement. Most patients tell me afterward that it was far less uncomfortable than they expected — often easier than a tooth extraction.
Post-procedure discomfort is real but manageable. Most patients are back to their normal routines within a few days, using over-the-counter pain relief as needed.
"The fear of implant pain is almost always worse than the implant itself. This is one of the things I hear most often from patients after the procedure."
Myth #2: "They're too expensive."
Implants do require a meaningful financial investment upfront. But I always ask patients to think about it differently: what is a missing tooth actually costing you right now? Bone loss that accelerates over time. Adjacent teeth shifting. Changes to your bite. The psychological cost of hiding your smile every single day.
A well-placed implant, properly maintained, can last a lifetime. Compare that to dentures or bridges, which typically need replacing every 7–15 years. Over a lifetime, implants are often the more economical choice — not just the better one.
Myth #3: "My body will reject the implant."
Implants are made from titanium — one of the most biocompatible materials known to medicine, also used in joint replacements and bone plates. True rejection is extremely rare. The success rate for dental implants is consistently over 95%, even higher in non-smokers with good bone density.
The more relevant concern is osseointegration — whether the implant will fuse properly with your bone. This is why a thorough assessment before placement matters. We evaluate bone density, your health history, and your habits to ensure you're a good candidate before we ever proceed.
Myth #4: "The recovery takes months."
The osseointegration (bone healing) process does take 3–6 months, but this doesn't mean you're out of commission. Most patients go home the same day, return to work within a few days, and eat normally (with some adjustments) within a week or two. The healing period passes largely in the background of your regular life.
Myth #5: "I'm too old for implants."
Age is almost never the limiting factor. What matters is your overall health, bone density, and the absence of uncontrolled systemic conditions. I have successfully placed implants in patients in their 70s and 80s. As long as you're healthy enough for a minor surgical procedure and you have adequate bone structure, age alone is not a disqualifier.
The bottom line
You don't have to live with a missing tooth. You don't have to keep covering your mouth when you laugh. The technology exists, the expertise is available, and the barrier is almost always a conversation — not a medical one.
If any of these myths have been holding you back, come in and let's talk through your specific situation. That's what consultations are for.
