How Long Do Dental Implants Last? Honest Answers.

It's one of the first questions patients ask — and a completely fair one, given the investment. The honest answer is: it depends on two things. The quality of the procedure, and what you do afterward.
The Implant Post Itself
The titanium post that goes into your jawbone is designed to be permanent. Titanium is biocompatible — your body doesn't reject it — and once osseointegration occurs (when the bone fuses around the implant, typically over 2–4 months), the post becomes a stable, load-bearing part of your jaw.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, the implant post can last 25 years or more. Many last a lifetime.
The Crown on Top
The crown — the visible tooth attached to the implant — has a slightly shorter lifespan because it bears the mechanical wear of biting and chewing. A well-made zirconia crown typically lasts 15–20 years before needing replacement. The implant beneath it remains intact; only the crown is changed.
What Affects Longevity
Bone quality at placement. An implant placed in dense, healthy bone integrates more reliably than one placed in compromised bone. This is why we assess bone with a CBCT scan before every case.
Oral hygiene. The gum tissue and bone around an implant can still be affected by infection — a condition called peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant, similar to gum disease around natural teeth). Daily brushing and flossing at the implant site is essential.
Regular check-ups. We monitor the bone level around each implant at every routine visit. Catching early changes prevents larger problems.
Habits. Grinding (bruxism), smoking, and uncontrolled diabetes all reduce implant lifespan. We discuss these during the consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an implant fail? Yes, though it's uncommon. Early failure (within the first few months) is usually due to inadequate osseointegration. Late failure is most often caused by peri-implantitis. Both are manageable when caught early.
When can I go back to normal eating? Soft foods for the first week post-surgery. Most patients return to a normal diet within 2–4 weeks.
